Hello My Beauties,
As you know I had the distinct privilege to participate in Samantha Bennett’s Signature program over the last six months. As a result, I learned soooo much about myself, what I am capable of, when I need to ask for help (Tech support, please!) AND that JOY is still my thing.
Want it to be your go to thing too? Come on, it’ll be fun, this deep dive into what brings YOU, J-O-Y.
In March of 2016 I wrote a blog called, Journal for Joy, where I proposed the correlation between keeping a gratitude journal and a life basking in appreciation and keeping a joy journal and allowing more joy into your life….
“What if we could extend this act of writing it down, to joy? What do you think it would do for you ~ your heart, your soul, your psyche ~ to take a few minutes of each day and contemplate what brings you joy and then to act on it, to bring positive, loving attention to it by writing it down?”
It’s been three years since I wrote that, and they’ve been the most joyous and the most challenging three years in a long while. But that’s the point, when you allow more joy into your life, it becomes easier to ride the wave of darkness that can sometimes crash ashore. And truthfully, when I really look back, all the darkness was just another way for the Universe to help me see the light in all its shapes and sizes and colors. I see the world through a clearer focus now, I appreciate the little things on a deeper, more conscious level. I’m awake and aware and loving and living to the best of my potential, whatever that may look like in the day in and day out.
Inviting JOY in, is an act of self-compassion.
No… it’s a rebellious act against the norm of: ‘no pain, no gain,’ ‘work harder and harder,’ ‘the tough get going when the going gets tough.’
No more, I say. Yes, ick happens. Yes, sometimes the world seems like it’s unraveling faster than we can mend it back together. But it’s within these cracks, these splits between the seams that the light shines the brightest.
There is nothing like a health scare for yourself, or a loved one, to open your eyes to the bullshit, the minutia that we can get so bogged down in. That stuff… just really doesn’t matter. Or rather, it matters as much as we allow it to matter.
JOY helps me put things into perspective, to know that tomorrow is a fresh start. That I get to choose how I deal with the massive piles of pooh. Run screaming with how stinky it is, or get out my can of glitter and dump the sparkly stuff all over it.
All of this is to say that, you have a choice. And it begins with the decision to choose JOY, even if joy means you got out of bed this morning, that you’ve got breath in your lungs and blood in your veins.
JOY can also mean that you SEE with a whole new awareness the beauty of Mother Nature, the way the trees and flowers ebb and flow with the seasons. They don’t rant and rave at an early winter frost, at a severe seven year drought. They just continue to be, to show up, to spread their life essence ~ their joy ~ simply because they can. It’s what they’re made for. It’s what you’re made for too.
ALL I’m asking of you is to take a moment for yourself, to re-discover what brings YOU joy. To learn what makes you smile bone deep, what makes you sigh in relief, what makes you get up in the morning to do it all over again. And then, choose to do it all over again with a bit more sparkle in your heart, in your step. To share that it’s good to be alive.
Journaling for JOY is a tool I’ve created to help you re-discover your love of self, your love of life. Like a gardener’s spade, writing about what brings you JOY will help till your soil, so that JOY can grow, even in the deep, dark parts of you.
Try it and see what you think. Practicing JOY has made all the difference for me, all the difference in the life I lead. I hope it does for you too.
As the month progresses, I’ll be sending out Joy Balms to soothe your soul and Joy Prompts to help you re-discover the JOY that is YOU.
